In this plan, the 15, 16, 18, 87, 151 (west of downtown) and the western
portion of the #2 (#2 Bayshore, west of Westboro) would be eliminated. It is
not to say that the 85, 86, 176, 99, and eastern portion of #2 are
functioning as well as they should, but rather this is an example.
Instead, the following routes are proposed:

W016 (red route)
- Westboro station
- east on Scott Street
- south on McRae
- east on Richmond
- south on Kirkwood
- west on Dovercourt - (could enter Hampton park)
- north on Tweedsmuir
- west on Clare
- north on Churchill
- east on Scott
- Westboro station
W015 (blue route)
- Westboro station
- west on Scott street
- south on Churchill
- west on Dovercourt
- south/jog on Sherbourne (as 16 does now)
- west on XXX
- Carlingwood - enter from the back, around clockwise (avoid Carling)
- north on Woodroffe
- east on Transitway
- Westboro station
W018 (yellow route)
- Lincoln Fields
- west on Carling
- north after Wal-Mart
- east on Richmond
- Westboro station (timepoint with 3-4 minute wait!)
- transitway to Woodroffe
- south on Woodroofe
- west on Richmond
- south on Richardson
- west on Carling
- Lincoln Fields
W151 (pink route)
- Westboro station
- simplified version of 151 route north of transitway
- Tunney's Pasture (timepoint!)
- south on Holland
- west on Byron
- north on Tweedsmuir (move light at Athlone/Richmond to Tweedsmuir, or it could use Kirkwood/McRae instead, or Athlone)
- Westboro station
(No solution is given here for eliminating the 151 from Merivale north of
Baseline. Likely that route should terminate at Westgate)
Note that these routes travel in ONE direction only, clockwise.
Some have suggested that they travel the other way in the evening, but
this is overly complex.
Runs of W015 would serve Nepean High school. The clockwise direction
optimizes for students from the east getting to school on time. It is unclear
how many students arrive from the west on the #16. Consideration could be
given to having a single articulated bus travel from Nepean to Tunney's at
3:40pm only. Otherwise students leaving later (band, soccer, basketball)
could take the W015 to Westboro station, and the W151/#2 to go to parts east.
COST ANALYSIS
Current service costs (units are hours)
- route 2
This route would be cut from Westboro to Bayshore. The section from Westboro to Lincoln Fields is replaced by the W018. The section between Lincoln Fields and Bayshore exactly repeats the 97, but at lower frequency.
- route 16
This route takes 32 minutes to travel from Lincoln Fields to Bayview/Scott, and does this 43 times each weekday schedule. It takes 28 minutes to travel from Bayview/Scott to Lincoln Heights, and it does this 43 times each weekday. On Sunday it takes 32 minutes going east 20 times, 26 minutes going west 20 times. On Saturday it takes 33 minutes going east 29 times and 22 minutes going west 29 times. The total is 15655 minutes or 260 hours of service.
- route 18
This route takes 20 minutes to travel from Lincoln Fields to Bayview/Scott, and does this 51 times each weekday schedule. It takes 26 minutes to travel from Bayview/Scott to Lincoln Heights, and it does this 51 times each weekday. On Sunday it takes 23 minutes going east 52 times, 25 minutes going west 52 times. On Saturday it takes 23 minutes going east 52 times and 22 minutes going west 52 times. The total is 16566 minutes or 276 hours of service.
- route 87
This route takes 13 minutes to travel from Carlingwood to Lebreton, doing this 46 times each weekday. It takes 13 minutes to travel from Lebreton to Carlingwood and does this 48 times each weekday. On Sunday it takes 12 minutes going west 16 times and 12 minutes going east 17 times. On Saturday it takes 12 minutes going east 23 times and 12 minutes going west 23 times. The total is 7046 minutes or 117 hours of service.
- route 151
This route takes 20 (21) minutes to travel from Westgate to(from) Tunney's Pasture. It does this 29 times on weekdays, 13 times on Sundays, 26 times on Saturdays. This is a total of 4460 minutes or 74 hours of service.
The total amount of service to be cut is 727 hours of service.
Four new buses are created. Each one can be serviced with a single operator and a single vehicle. Service from 6am to 12pm is desired. That amounts to 18 hours of service * 4 buses * 7 days/week = 504 hours of service.
This represents a net savings of 223 hours of service, or 30%. It is very signficant that savings are possible at the same time as an increase in both frequency and duration. This is due to the elimination of duplication and the use of trunking.
Some of this savings will have to returned in the form of additional service on the transitway from Lincoln Heights to downtown. That is a time distance of 13 minutes. Using 50 hours of the savings, 10 hours per weekday, this represents 60 new runs/day of a transitway (95/97 equivalent) on weekdays. As the transitway buses are seldom full at present on weekends and off-peak, no additional service would be necessary. Some services that are being cut currently operate as low-floor buses, and all are 40 foot buses. So no additional articulated buses would become available, however, it is certainly possible to run 40 foot buses on the transitway route.
It is possible to have one operator alternate between different routes providing 30 minute service. This is not desired, as it will not result in any increase in transit trips.
(Note that the Lebreton/Hurdman 87 service is redundant with the 85/95/97 as well, but elimination of that section should not be credited to Westboro)
